Jeff & Augusta's
15th Annual Halloween Costume Party!
The Party is over, pictures are here!
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
While I nodded, nearly napping, I completely ran out of clever ways
to write an invitation to the Bowden’s
15th Annual Halloween Costume Party!
Well, what do you expect after fifteen years? It’s a long time! But, however long it’s been, and no matter how many times you’ve been, this year will be amazing! You can tell by how many exclamation marks I’m using!
First, and most importantly, this is a costume party. Costumes are required. You may not know this, but the raven in Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem is visiting a distraught man. Distraught because he was kicked out of his lady friend Lenore’s costume party for not wearing a costume. Trust me, I’m a poem-ologist. Yeah, it’s a thing.
Now, the lost verses to this poem reveal the raven’s admonitions to avoid being kicked out of future costume parties. Surprising, considering the raven only speaks a single word in the entirety of the rest of the poem.
Quoth the raven, “Wear a costume.”
Quoth the raven, “Don’t not wear a costume.”
Quoth the raven, “If you have to ask, you’re not wearing a costume.”
Quoth the raven, “No, that novelty t-shirt is not a costume, and it’s not that clever.”
Quoth the raven, “Everyone else will be wearing one.”
Quoth the raven, “If you wore it to work, it's not a costume.”
Quoth the raven, “Don't be forced to wear the loaner costume.”
Quoth the raven, “Make it epic! It will be fun!”
Quoth the raven, “Does anyone have a lozenge?”
Yeah, the rhyming and trochaic octameter kind of fall apart at the end. Probably why Poe left them out.
If you need some costume ideas, the raven is also trying his hand, err, wing at coming up with ideas:

Quoth the raven, “see you there!”
